Locals in Telluride have a new way of shedding old treasures and finding new ones. Deer, a home consignment store and gift shop run by Telluride artists Judy Haas and Michelle Curry Wright, opened on Dec. 1. The shop is located in Haas’ former studio at 225 S. Pine St., a small space that is slowly being filled with art, antiques, Western collectibles, candles, jewelry and other items. The women have lined the shop’s walls with their own artwork and brought in an inventory of home items, and they are seeking whimsical artifacts, old books, vintage dinnerware, overlooked heirlooms and other treasures to sell on consignment. The women decided to open the store, they said, after discovering an unfilled niche in the town’s retail landscape — home consignment. Haas had opened her art studio in the space in June of 2012, where she exhibited her well-known trout paintings and fractal pieces. Last summer, she began to add to the art, bringing in many of the antiques and collectibles she had gathered when she used to build, furnished and designed small cabins in Aspen.
